- Handwash your cutting board and don’t put it to dishwasher. Dishwasher has a bad influence on wood structure and lets the wood soak a lot of water and when it finally dries it may crack. Also, the dishwasher soap contains active acids that destroy the wood structure and after a few cycles in the dishwasher your decorative cutting board may look old, over dry and bleak.
- Leave your board in a vertical position to dry. If your cutting board is wet after washing, don’t lay it down on the counter to dry, but lean it against the wall letting the access of the air from both sides. This way the bord dries evenly from both sides. If the cutting board is put on the solid surface wet from both sides or the bord is dry but the surface is wet, the bord will be wet from lower side without any chance to dry out while the upper side of your heart cutting board will get dry quickly. This will cause the board to bend and warp because the wet side will get wider while the dry side will shrink.
- Coat your heart cutting board with oil. Wooden cutting boards need oiling from time to time. Oil blocks the pores of wood and prevents dirt and liquids from penetrating into the wood. There are several different types of cutting board oils available. The classic choice would be a mineral oil for cutting boards.
